Each year, Teewah Beach becomes one of the most special places on the Sunshine Coast. From summer through early autumn, endangered marine turtles make their way ashore under the cover of darkness to nest, and weeks later, tiny hatchlings emerge and begin their incredible journey to the ocean.
This period, known as turtle hatchling season, is a critical time for the survival of these little legends — and it’s also when we can make the biggest positive impact.
Why Teewah Beach Matters
Teewah Beach is an important nesting area for marine turtles, including loggerhead turtles. Hatchlings rely on clear, safe beaches to find their way to the water. Unfortunately, human activity and marine debris can create serious obstacles.
Things like plastic, fishing line, bottle caps and other rubbish can:
- Block hatchlings on their path to the ocean
- Cause entanglement or injury
- Be mistaken for food once turtles reach the water
A cleaner beach genuinely gives hatchlings a better chance of survival.
Our Teewah Beach Clean-Up: Supporting Turtle Hatchlings
At Epic Ocean Adventures, caring for the ocean and coastline is part of who we are. That’s why we’re hosting a Teewah Beach Clean-Up for Turtle Hatchlings — bringing our community together to protect this incredible environment.
Event details:
- Date: Sunday 8th February
- Time: 2:00pm – 6:00pm
- Meeting point: Noosa North Shore Ferries
- Transport: Transport along Teewah Beach is provided
We’ll spend the afternoon removing rubbish from the beach, helping create a safer nesting and hatching environment during this crucial season.
To finish the day, we’ll come together for a relaxed drink at Noosa North Shore Sunset Social Bar & Bistro — a well-earned wind-down after doing something meaningful for the ocean.
How You Can Help During Hatchling Season
Even outside of clean-up days, small actions make a big difference:
- Always take your rubbish with you
- Avoid leaving holes or sand structures overnight
- Keep lights low or off on the beach at night
- Drive carefully and only where permitted
- Respect any marked nesting areas
If you’re lucky enough to witness hatchlings, admire from a distance and let them make their way naturally to the sea.
